Paramesh Gopi expected surgical treatment when he approached Dr. Peter Hwang with a months-long sinus infection. Instead, the entrepreneur ended up discussing a new decongestion method that Hwang and a colleague were developing. It would use targeted vibrations to constrict inflamed sinus tissue and move mucus, clearing stuffed passages. The experience inspired Gopi, now SoundHealth's CEO, to join them in creating the Sonu headband, which emits sound waves after the companion smartphone app scans a user’s face to determine their sinuses’ resonant frequencies. In June, Sonu became the first FDA-approved device for treating nasal congestion and allergies without drugs.
